In a shaft seal for an hydrogen-cooled turbogenerator or other gas-filled electric machine and comprising a sealing ring 3 movable in a stationary seal housing 2 and surrounding the shaft 51 with a small clearance 7 supplied with sealing liquid, e.g. oil, at a pressure higher than that of the gas in the machine, an annular chamber 4 defined by the housing 2 and the ring 3 is kept at least partly occupied by gas or is under vacuum to thereby avoid an hydraulic coupling between the ring 3 and the housing 2, which is undesirable when the ring oscillates due to radial vibration of the shaft. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, sealing liquid is supplied to the clearance 7 through passages 5 and 6 and a rubber &c. tube 8 which is closed and may be filled with gas is housed in the chamber 4. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, sealing liquid is supplied to the clearance 17 between the shaft 11 and the housing 13 through passages 15 and 16 and the annular chamber 14 either communicates with atmosphere or is under vacuum or filled with gas, any sealing liquid leaking into the chamber passing out through an outlet 20. Part of the sealing liquid is utilized to automatically balance the axial forces acting on the ring 12 by connecting a radial gap 19 to the passage 16 by a throttle bore 18.
