PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device and a method for automatically controlling brightness are provided to stably sense external light regardless of an external noise or a temperature using a photo sensor. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal panel which has a first and a second substrates and a liquid crystal layer which is filled between the first and the second substrates, a gate driver and a data driver which are formed on a non-display area of the first substrate, a photo sensor(140) which is formed on the outer side of the first substrate, dummy sensor(130) which is formed on the non-display area of the first substrate and hid by the second substrate, and control unit which has a power supplier and a timing controller which controls a backlight unit.
