Lubricants comprise a cutting oil having dissolved therein at least one resinous polysulphide of an aryl hydrocarbon having at least one nuclear halogen substituent, preferably one obtained by heating polychlorophenyl polysulphides at 80-250 DEG C. The cutting oil may be paraffinic, o-naphthenic (e.g. a spindle oil), or a heavy alkyl benzene oil, and may be emulsified in water. In an example, an aqueous emulsion of a cutting oil containing a resinous additive as defined above, also contains a heavy alkyl benzene sulphonate as emulsifier, and mercaptobenzthiazole as corrosion inhibitor.ALSO:Chlorophenyl polysulphides, probably of the formula <FORM:1029219/C2/1> where X is chlorine, p and m are integers from 0-5, without both being 0, and n is 2-4 inclusive, are prepared by reacting S2Cl2, or a solution of sulphur in S2Cl2, with a polychlorophenyl compound in the presence of a FriedelCrafts catalyst, e.g. AlCl3. On heating to a temperature of 80-250 DEG C. resinous products of m.w. 400-600 are obtained. In Examples, polysulphides of a mixture of isomeric tri- and tetra-chlorobenzenes are prepared. |
