PRODUCTION OF OPEN-CELL POROUS MATERIALS BY THE USE OF CRYSTALLINE WATER-SOLUBLE CARBOHYDRATES AS A FILLER.

A powder metallurgy method for the production of open-cell porous materials by the use of a crystalline water-soluble carbohydrate (3) as a filler is described. A powder of a selected parent material (1) is mixed with the crystalline water-soluble carbohydrate (3) along with a minimal quantity of a binder (2). The powder mixture is compressed and then immersed in water so that the crystalline water-soluble carbohydrate (3) is dissolved and an intermediate porous material (10) is formed, which is then sintered to produce the final porous product (12). The whole procedure is environmentally friendly, and the filler is a cheap material suitable for the production of porous materials from various parent material powders (1). The final porous materials (12) present high homogeneity as regards the size and distribution of the pores.
