[Also in Division H2] The stator (3) of an electric motor, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), is eccentrically offset, with respect to the bearings (1a) and (1b) of a rotor (2), in a vertical plane passing through the axis of the bearings, so that the resultant magnetic forces (M) at least partly balance the weight (G) of the rotor to facilitate starting. The bearings (1a) and (1b) are dynamic gas or liquid bearings. The eccentricity of the stator may be fixed or variable.
