The backrest has a frame made of a plastic material and provided with reinforcements and an armrest pivotingly mounted along a horizontal axis (B) and retractable in a housing (3). The reinforcements comprise a bar (52) extending vertically near a lateral edge (31) of the housing, and the armrest is pivotingly mounted between lateral supports (6, 7) connected to the backrest independent with each other. One of the supports situated at the lateral edge of the housing is hooked on the bar without being integrated in a manner to transmit torque exerted on the support by the armrest to the bar.
