PURPOSE: A composition containing Astragalus membranaceus extract for preventing or relieving obesity is provided to suppress appetite and to reduce body weight. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing or relieving obesity contains Astragalus membranaceus extract as an active ingredient. A method for preparing the extract comprises: a step of mixing Astragalus membranaceus with water and heating at 80-100 °C for 0.5-5 hours; a step of adding one or more kinds of enzyme among amylase and cellulase for hydrolysis at 20-70 °C for 0.5-5 hours; and a step of filtering or precipitating the hydrolyzed mixture solution. A health food for suppressing or treating obesity contains the extract as an active ingredient.
