PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element that prevents a liquid crystal layer and an alignment layer from being irradiated with UV light, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal optical element 10, UV degradation of a liquid crystal material 20 and alignment layers 40 and 41 can be prevented by mixing a UV absorbent 90 in an imprint resin layer 30 to reduce transmission of UV light. Especially in a liquid crystal dropping step (ODF) for vacuum bonding using a UV curing seal, a liquid crystal is protected by the imprint resin later 30, so that no shielding mask or alignment is required, UV light can be directly radiated and contamination from the seal to the liquid crystal layer can be suppressed by simplifying the step and shortening the time of contact between the seal and the liquid crystal.
