PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system capable of holding engine valve stably at a larger working angle and/or lift amount than the minimum working angle and/or lift amount when the engine is at a standstill. SOLUTION: A holding mechanism 35 is equipped with a plurality of arm members 36 provided at several places on a control shaft 24 in such a manner as protruding in the radial direction, a plurality of plungers 39 installed able to abut to the flank in the swinging direction of each arm member in which the control shaft enlarges the lift amount and the working angle of a suction valve 3, and coil springs 40 to which the plungers give the energizing forces to respective arm members. When the control shaft rotates to a minute lift control position when the engine is stopped, the plungers press the respective arm members and rotate the control shaft to a minor lift control position to suit the starting.
