Disclosed is a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery (lithium ion secondary battery) for in-vehicle use, which is suppressed in inhibition of absorption and desorption of lithium ions due to adsorption of a carboxymethyl cellulose on the surface of an active material and has excellent input and output characteristics. Specifically disclosed is a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery which comprises a positive electrode that is capable of absorbing and desorbing lithium ions and a negative electrode that is capable of absorbing and desorbing lithium ions, and which is charged or discharged through a nonaqueous electrolyte. The nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is characterized in that: the negative electrode is configured of a negative electrode material (15) and a negative electrode mixture layer (17) that is formed on the negative electrode material (15); the negative electrode mixture layer (17) contains a negative electrode active material, a negative electrode binder and a carboxymethyl cellulose; and the number average degree of polymerization of the carboxymethyl cellulose is 1,000-1,500 (inclusive).
