952,980. Lathes; broaching. H. LINDEMANN, [trading as TH. CALOW & CO.]. Jan. 18, 1963 [Jan. 18, 1962], No. 2288/63. Headings B3L and B3T. A method of peeling tubes or bars 1 comprises two successive, oppositely-directed peeling operations, each starting at a point intermediate the ends of the bar, the depth of cut increasing at the beginning of the first operation. As shown, the bar is pulled by a clamp 4<SP>1</SP>, 411, operated by a cam 6, through a cutter-head 3<SP>1</SP> and a guide 8 of the kind described in Specification 894,485. After the part 1<SP>1</SP> of the bar has been peeled, this part is gripped by the clamp and the other part 1<SP>11</SP> pulled through the head 3<SP>1</SP>, which need not be rotated. A separate machine may be used for the second peeling operation, or the machine may have two oppositely - directed peeling heads and clamps so that the bar need not be reversed for the second operation. For peeling rectangular sections, all the cutting sections of the head or die need not be in the same plane, e.g. one pair of opposite faces may be machined before the other. |
