PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily producing a hydrophilic porous carbon material excellent in hydrophilicity. SOLUTION: The method for producing the hydrophilic porous carbon material comprises a step of bringing a porous carbon material into contact with ozone gas and water vapor to obtain such the hydrophilic porous carbon material that the amount of carboxy groups on the surface thereof is 100-30,000μmol/m<SP>2</SP>. It is preferable that the concentration of the ozone gas is 5,000-35,000 ppm and that of the water vapor is 5,000-120,000 ppm. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
