Provided is a process by which alkyl 5-methyl-5-hexenoates can be industrially prepared with high efficiency at a low cost. A process for the preparation of alkyl 5-methyl-5-hexenoates, characterized by heating a dialkyl (3-methyl-3-butenyl)malonate in the presence of water and a base to decarboxylate the dialkyl (3-methyl-3-butenyl)malonate.
