In a character recognition process, the accuracy regarding handwriting/printing discrimination can be increased, processing time for character recognition can be shortened, and the character recognition accuracy can be increased. Gradation distribution of a character image is analyzed (S4), character color of the character image is analyzed (S5), a ratio between the gradation at an inflection point of the character stroke and the gradation at the point other than the inflection point of the character stroke is analyzed (S6), a character stroke edge strength is analyzed (S7), the longitudinal size and the center position of the character image is analyzed (S8), a character size and a pitch of the character image is analyzed (S9), first to sixth scores obtained by numerical conversion of the respective analysis results are combined to judge whether the character image is handwritten or printed (S10), and a mixture of handwriting/printing in a recognition target item is checked (S11). Thereby, the accuracy regarding handwriting/printing discrimination can be increased, processing time for character recognition can be shortened, and the character recognition accuracy can be increased. |
