A method includes sampling energy of a particular radio channel within a time window to obtain a plurality of received signal strength indications; analyzing the plurality of received signal strength indications using a procedure that is capable of finding a periodic signal in a sampled sequence containing noise, such as a folding algorithm; associating at least one peak that is output from the folding algorithm with a potential beacon transmission from at least one access point operating in the particular radio channel; and turning on a wireless local area network radio to scan the particular channel to detect the at least one access point.
