PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copier which can check the brightness of a light source without impairing the rapid start of the scanning of an original document and without allowing print processing to proceed ahead of image data recording at high-speed copy processing for the parallel processing of the scanning of an original document and printing. SOLUTION: A carriage (240) with a light source is in a standby state at a first position opposing a reference plate (236) of an ADF (230). Prior to the start of scanning the original document, a first lamp check is made by lighting up the light source (241) of the carriage (240) which stops at the first position. When high-speed copy requirements including the fact that a result of the first lamp check is favorable are met, high-speed copy processing is executed. In other cases, normal copy processing is executed on the condition that a result of lamp check at the first position or a second position opposite to the reference surface (223) on which the carriage is locked is favorable.
