PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal material extensible of the temperature range developing a smectic APRphase to a lower temperature side. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 30 containing a liquid crystal material is provided between a TFT array substrate 10 and an opposing substrate 20. The liquid crystal material is a curved chain molecule having a spontaneously polarized dipole in the minor axis direction of the curved structure and exhibiting a smectic APRphase, and having a monovalent terminal group containing silicon as a constituting element at least on one terminal thereof. The terminal group contains silicon and together carbon and hydrogen, or silicon and together carbon, hydrogen and oxygen as constituting elements. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
