The subject invention concerns materials and methods for modulating lignin levels, cellulose content, and/or growth rates in plants. In one aspect, the invention concerns materials and methods for decreasing lignin levels and/or increasing cellulose content and/or increasing growth rates in plants. In one embodiment, a method of the invention comprises inhibiting or decreasing expression of a cpgl3 gene (or a homolog thereof that provides for substantially the same activity), or inhibiting or decreasing expression or activity of the protein encoded by a cpgl3 gene thereof, in a plant, wherein inhibition of expression of the cpgl3 gene or inhibition of expression or activity of the protein encoded by a cpgl3 gene results in decreased lignin levels and/or increased cellulose levels in the plant (relative to lignin and cellulose levels of the plant not having inhibition of cpgl 3). |
