PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a constant mesh type start device for an internal combustion engine, capable of improving durability while reducing the cost. SOLUTION: The start device includes: a claw member 17 which is rockably mounted to a drive plate 14 rotating integrally with a driven gear 13; a mechanism (including 19, 20, 22, 23 and 24) which flips up the tip of the claw member 17 to the outer peripheral side when a relative rotational difference is generated between a body 2 of the internal combustion engine and the drive plate 14; a driven plate 26 which rotates integrally with a crankshaft 3; and a rack section 26a which rotates integrally with the driven plate 26, is caught by the tip of the claw member 17 flipped up when the rotational speed of the drive plate 14 is higher than that of the driven plate 26, and flips down the tip of the claw member 17 to the inner peripheral side when the rotational speed of the drive plate 14 is lower than that of the driven plate 26.
