Anion-exchange resins are produced by reacting (a) a cross-linked co-polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing nitrile groups and a polyethylenically unsaturated cross-linking agent with (b) a polyamine which contains at least one primary amino group. The cross-linked copolymers are produced by copolymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing nitrile groups with a cross-linking agent containing a plurality of non-conjugated olefinically unsaturated groups. Suitable nitrile containing monomers are acrylonitrile; alkyl substituted and halogenated acrylonitriles; vinylidene cyanide; fumaric, maleic and crotonic acid nitriles; b -cyanoacrylates; a -cyanosorbic acid esters; p-cyanostyrene; allyl and methallyl cyanides. Suitable cross-linking agents are polyvinyl-aromatic monomers such as divinylbenzene, -toluenes, -xylenes, -ketone, and -naphthalenes; trivinyl benzene; N,N1-methylenediacrylic acid amide and triacryloyl-sym.-perhydrotriazine. Other copolymerizable monomers that may also be incorporated are aromatic vinyl compounds; vinyl acetate or chloride; vinylidene chloride; a , b -olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids, esters e.g. methyl acrylate and amides; and butadiene and isoprene. The polymerization is effected by known methods using the usual catalysts such as peroxides and azo compounds and optionally with the addition of known activators. The cross-linked polymer is then reacted with a polyamine such as ethylene, propylene and tetramethylene diamines, polyalkylene-polyamines and alkylated or hydroalkylated derivatives of these amines. The products may be quaternated. |
