<p>Disclosed is a display element (10) provided with: an upper substrate (first substrate) (2); a lower substrate (second substrate) (3); and a conductive liquid (16) and oil (17) which are sealed, so as to be movable toward an effective display region (P1) side or a non-effective display region (P2) side, inside a display space (S) formed between the upper substrate (2) and the lower substrate (3). Together with using the conductive liquid (16) which has been colored black, the non-effective display region (P2) is set by means of a black matrix section (light-shielding film) (11s) provided at the upper substrate (2) side, and the effective display region (P1) is set by means of a color filter section (opening) (11r) formed in the black matrix section (11s). The dimensions of the effective display region (P1) and the non-effective display region (P2) are determined in the black matrix section (11s) in accordance with the dimensions of ribs (14a, 14b) and a gap dimension (H) between the upper substrate (2) and the lower substrate (3).</p> |
