PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner which always accurately detects a refrigerant filler content without providing a heating means for a liquid surface detection circuit, and to provide a method for detecting a refrigerant content of the air conditioner. SOLUTION: The air conditioner 1 connecting an outdoor unit 2 and an indoor unit 3 includes the liquid surface detection circuit 30 which connects a position at predetermined height of a receiver 15 and an intake side of a compressor 10 and which has a bypass circuit 31 provided with an opening/closing valve 33 and a decompression mechanism 32, a temperature detection means 34 for detecting the temperature of a refrigerant flowing in the liquid surface detection circuit 30 and decompressed by the decompression mechanism 32, and a refrigerant content detection means 35 which controls the intermediate pressure in the receiver 15 to be pressure in which a superheating degree is not less than 5 deg of a low-pressure saturation gas temperature and in which the saturation gas line of a pressure-enthalpy chart is inclined to rise upward to the right side, and which detects the temperature of the refrigerant taken out of the receiver 15 to the liquid surface detection circuit 30 by the temperature detection means 34 for determining the refrigerant filler content based on the temperature.
