<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst and a process for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides in a diesel engine exhaust gas with ammonia or a compound decomposable to ammonia. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust gas to be cleaned is passed through the catalyst comprising zeolite or a zeolite analogue containing 1-10 mass% copper using total mass of zeolite or the zeolite analogue as a reference and a cerium-zirconium mixed oxide and/or cerium oxide with ammonia and a compound decomposable to ammonia.
