A method of processing image pixel data for a multiview display comprises receiving image pixel data and a first processing step of processing said pixel data to produce a multiple-view effect to a viewer. In a second processing step, for each of a plurality of subsets of the pixel data, where each subset comprises a same number of pixel groups and each pixel group comprises at least one pixel, new pixel data is generated for at least one of the pixel groups of the subset in dependence upon the pattern of pixel data in the pixel groups of the subset. The generation of the new pixel data is performed in a manner that is capable of distinguishing at least one such pattern from its inverse. Also disclosed is a method wherein the first processing step involves the introduction of variations in luminance which are not perceivable by an on-axis viewer (ie one directly in front of the display), yet perceivable by an off-axis viewer. Another method disclosed involves, in the second processing step, calculating a measure (eg an average) based upon image pixel data and, dependent upon the result, assigning the pixels to one of a predetermined set of levels. Each of the methods disclosed is intended to enable a multiview display with optimized image quality in which the multiple views are provided by image processing steps. |
