PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep focusing on a principal subject when a photographer focuses on a background behind the subject in out-of-focus while maintaining the responsiveness of focusing when changing composition. SOLUTION: In the autofocus device where a photographic optical system focuses on a past subject (previous subject) for a set time after deciding that the past subject and a new subject are not regarded as the same one and focuses on the new subject after the set time, whether the new subject exists farther than the past subject or nearer than it is decided based on the result of focus detection in the focus detection area.
