The device has a rotational speed scale (4) and a speed scale (6) whose relative scalings (15) are variable by considering proportionality between engine speed (U/Min) and vehicle speed (v) based on an actual transmission ratio (16). The proportionality exists during slip-free power transmission between the engine and a drive shaft (13) of a motor vehicle. The representation of the engine speed and/or the vehicle speed is changed when slip-free power transmission does not exist. The representation of the vehicle speed is stopped when the vehicle is in a standstill condition. An independent claim is also included for a method for optically representing actual engine speed and/or speed of a vehicle.
