A tool-holding device comprises a rotatable sleeve 11, a tool-holder 12 engageable in the sleeve, locking means 13, 50 on the sleeve for locking the holder in a predetermined axial position, and means 82, Fig. 8, for holding the locking means in locked position when the holder is removed from the sleeve. The tool 20 is clamped in the holder 12 by a collet 26 tightened by an axially fast nut 29, the collet being prevented from rotation by a key 38. The axial position of the holder is determined by a shoulder 21 which abuts against the locking ring 50. Thus the length X from the shoulder 21 to the tool tip may be pre-set before the holder 12 is inserted in the sleeve 11 which may be integral with a machine tool spindle. The end of the tool is supported by a screwed plug 42. (In a modification, the shoulder 21 is formed on an adjustable collar 21a, Fig. 1a, and the tool 20a is inserted in a tapered bore 25a, the nut 29 and collet 26 being omitted.) When the tool-holder 12 is inserted in the sleeve 11, the shoulder 21 engages and lifts the plunger 82 to allow a ball 86 to move inwardly and unlock the collar 13, which is then rotated by a torsion spring 72 to cause cam surfaces in the collar to press balls 62 into a groove 63 in the holder thus to retain it. The balls 62 engage the top of the groove 63 to ensure that the shoulder 21 is pressed against the sleeve. To release the holder, the collar 13 is rotated manually and is locked in the released position as the holder is withdrawn by the plunger 82 moved downwardly by a spring 83. |
