948,569. Compression moulding tubular elements. A. O. SMITH CORPORATION. Oct. 5, 1962 [Oct. 18, 1961], No. 37756/62. Heading B5A. Tubular elements are moulded by the forcing of a plurality of mandrels simultaneously into a preform of material disposed within the cavity to compress the material between the mandrels and the die cavity. Tee 1, of glass reinforced plastics (50% glass fibre) is moulded from partially cured preform 21, of 3 to 1 bulk factor, within cavity 6 which is completed by lowering upper die 4. Heated mandrels 9-11 actuated from cylinders 14 enter the cavity to meet at the centre and deform and cure the preform 21 to the moulded shape of tee 1. Dies 4 and 5 are also heated, electric heaters 17 are secured to blocks 12 and electric cartridge heaters 18 are inserted into the mandrels. Alternatively steam or oil heating may be used.
