An apparatus 1 to dry articles (in particular clothes) comprises passing exhaust combustion gases via an inlet (5, fig 3) through a heat exchanger 7 that surrounds a space 13 within which the articles to be dried are placed and exhausting the exhaust gas via outlets 15 to atmosphere after passing through the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger comprises a convoluted passage being an inner wall surface of a housing 3 and a zig zag plate 11 located in and spaced from the wall of the housing. The space for the articles to be dried may receive a rack arrangement 19 to hang clothes that may be raised or lowered and inserted or removed through an opening in the bottom of the apparatus. Pipes 33 communicating water may be threaded though the zig zag plate and heat water that may be collected in a tank 35. Solar panels 37 may assist in heating the water. The apparatus may be attached to wall of building via brackets 4. A second heat exchanger (41, fig 3) using the exhaust gas via a separate inlet (43) may be used to heat the water and is in communication with the water tank.
