Polyvinyl acetal obtained by reaction of polyvinyl alcohol with at least one aldehyde to an acetalization degree of at least 75 mol.%, is new, where a hydroxyl blockiness of the polyvinyl acetal is defined as the ratio of the number of methylene groups of two adjacent alcohol sequences (VV) and the total number of methylene groups of adjacent alcohol/acetal sequences and acetal/acetal sequences (VB and BB) of more than 0.151. An independent claim is included for the preparation of polyvinyl acetal.
