The system (1) has a toothed rack (3) extending through a vehicle steering system housing (2). An electric motor (4) is coupled with the toothed rack by a transmission (8). A steering controller is coaxially arranged at or in the system housing. A locking device (9) is arranged in the system housing inaccessible from an outside, and restrains the steering system in an activated condition. The locking device is electrically connected with the steering controller inaccessible from the outside. The locking device has a locking element shiftable parallel to the toothed rack.
