Butadiene free from acetylene is prepared by reacting butene at an elevated temperature, e.g. 200-500 DEG C., in the vapour phase with molecular oxygen over a catalyst and recovering by conventional means butadiene containing not more than 0.3% by volume of acetylene. A gaseous diluent, e.g. nitrogen and/or steam may be employed. The catalyst may be bismuth tungstate or molybdate, mixtures of tin oxide and antimony oxide, phosphoric acid/alumina, and phosphoric acid/tin oxide. The acetylene may be removed by fractional distillation extractive distillation with acetonitrile or extraction with a preferential solvent for the butene/butadiene mixture, e.g. aromatic, alicyclic or aliphatic hydrocarbons.
|
