PURPOSE: A display device, backlight unit and a method for controlling the same are provided to reduce image quality by monitoring the operation state of a local control mode of a back light unit. CONSTITUTION: A local dimming driving controller requests the location information of a local control light source from a light source controller. The location information of the local control light source is determined based on an input image signal(S12). The duty ratio of the control signal outputted to each switching element is determined(S14). The location of the light source receiving a local control signal is determined(S16). It is determined whether a local control determination location and local control execution location are identical(S18). A number of a current error is counted in local control(S20). The calculated number is compared with a set number(S22).
