The instrument (1) has a pointer (19) and a dial (21) for optically and visibly displaying information e.g. engine speed, to an operator of a motor vehicle. A transparent covering device (10) e.g. light guide, is arranged in a line of sight. The pointer and the dial are covered by the covering device, which has an optically transparent view surface solid body (13) with a view surface (25). The covering device has a tube section body, where the covering device and the dial completely enclose the pointer and a cavity. The view and covering surfaces are arranged parallel to each other.
