The unit (1) has a transfer element (2) for transferring shifting or selection motions with respect to a longitudinal axis (2a). The longitudinal axis is displaced in an axial direction and/or is arranged in a circumferential direction in a housing (6). Limit stops (22a-22d, 28a-28d) i.e. bolts, limit the shifting or selection motions, which are adjusted to different selection or shifting motions. The limit stops are fixed by a holder (18) in a common manner. A shifting fork stays in an effective connection with the transfer element and is engaged in a sliding sleeve. An independent claim is also included for a method for compensating tolerances of a shifting unit.
