A gas tight casing for a semi-conductor device comprises a base and a cap member which are joined by pressure against a ring shaped bearer member and the base member has grip or other portions suitable for use in fixing the device to a support member. Fig. 2 shows a semi-conductor element 21 mounted between electrode 22 and base member 12 in the form of a bolt. The assembly is enclosed in a sealed housing formed by a cylindrical cover 10 having a flange 11 which is cold pressed to a flange 14 on bolt member 12, the pressing operation being performed by applying a tube shaped tool to the upper side of flange 11 against resistance provided by bearer member 16 which rests on the surface of bolt 12. Grooves 17 are provided to take up flowing metal. The cover portion 10 contains an insulating box 32 and is sealed by a glass inlet ring 29. Other embodiments are described in which the flanges and bearing member are arranged in different relative positions including one in which the cover 10 has no flange and is placed inside a short tube projecting from the surface of bolt 12 the pressure being applied by a roller towards the axis of the device the bearer 16 having no contact with bolt 12. The casing may be of copper or aluminium and the bearer of steel or other material which is harder than that of the casing. The casing may be oval, rectangular or parallelapiped shaped. |
