The system has a source controller for directing a beam e.g. laser beam, of energy towards an x-ray tube target. The controller directs a solid stock material towards the beam of energy to cause the solid stock material to melt and deposit as a melted material on the x-ray tube target. The controller moves a portion of the x-ray tube target in a direction relative to the beam of energy while directing the beam of energy towards the x-ray tube target and directing the solid stock material towards the beam of energy. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for fabricating an x-ray tube target (2) a method for repairing an x-ray tube target.
