A means for guiding bar stock in an automatic lathe is described in the parent Specification in which the opening and closing of the collet is effected by a rotatable member actuated by a cam-operated lever. The present invention relates to the actuation of the rotatable member and comprises the rocker 16 which is actuated by a sliding rod 23 controlled by an electromagnet 24. The action of the electromagnet itself is controlled through a switch 25 which is operated by a cam 21 keyed to the cam-shaft 3. Other embodiments show alternative mounting positions for the electromagnet with subsequent rocker lever changes. An internal conical abutment 8a of the sleeve 8 closes the collet when pushed into the sleeve contrary to that described in the parent Specification.
