[Also in Division F2] Rope hauling apparatus comprises a driving pulley 4 pivoted in a frame 1, and a flexible belt or chain 7 attached by a pin 11 at one end to the frame 1, the other end being tensioned by the rope 6 being hauled, so that the belt or chain tension is proportional to the load on the rope 6, the belt or chain being fitted round a part of the periphery of the pulley 4 to press the rope 6 thereagainst to increase adhesion. In Figs. 1 and 2, the pulley 4 is keyed to a driving shaft 3 having a squared end 21 to receive a handle 22, a ratchet-wheel 16 on the shaft 3 being releasably engaged by a pawl 17. A chain 7 comprises links 8, the link pins 9 of which carry rollers 10 which press the rope 6 into the pulley groove 4A. One arm 13A of a bell-crank 13, pivoted at 14 to the frame 1, is pivoted at 12 to the free end of the chain 7. In use an anchor rope 15 is connected to the crank arm 13B so that the load on the haulage side 6A of the rope 6 is reacted by the rope 15, the slack side 6B passing over a guide pulley on the pin 11. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the reaction load on the rope 15 is transmitted to the chain 7 through a lever 33, segment teeth 32, 31, and a crank 30. The lever 33 may be replaced by a bell-crank. In Fig. 5, the load is carried by a hook 55 on a movable pulley 54, the end of the haulage side 6A of the rope 6 being anchored to arms 52A of bell-cranks 50A pivoted on plates 1C, 1D, fixed to the frame. The other crank arms 51A are connected at 12 to the free end of chain 7. The anchor rope is attached to a hook 56 on the frame. The variation shown in Fig. 8 has the pulley 61 rotatable on the drive shaft 3, the drive being conveyed through a pinion 60, an idler gear 62, and a ring gear integral with the pulley 61. The haulage side 6A of the rope 6 acts to tension the chain 7 through a guide pulley 23 at the free end of the chain. The shaft carrying the pulley 23 is guided in slots in the frame. All forms of the apparatus include the ratchet device 16, 17. The surface of the pulley groove may be roughened. The pulley may be motor driven, e.g. through a chain drive or gear train. In apparatus for light applications, the chain 7 may be replaced by a flexible belt comprising a series of rubber belts.</p> |
