In one embodiment, the present invention includes a method for determining whether a select statement can be transformed, and if so selecting a first or second transformation operation based on compiler-evaluated values for certain variables of the select statement, performing the selected transformation operation to obtain at least one new statement, and replacing the select statement with the at least one new statement.
