FIELD: physics. ^ SUBSTANCE: pulsed acoustic signal is emitted into a water medium, where the said signal propagates on both sides of the vessel perpendicular its centre plane with coverage of the location sector equal to 180. The echo signal is received from N directions (N>10) lying in the location sector with distances greater than the distance of the fish from the moving vessel. The number of detected fish is determined from parameters of the received echo signals. That number is then corrected based on the coefficient of reduction of the viewing field "Kuzo", which depends on speed, rate of roll, different, angular velocity on yaw and other parameters of the position of the vessel. Location parameters (period of location, number of duration of probing signals, the width of the directional characteristic of the antenna etc) are measured in such a way that the error in the number of detected fish is minimum.
