PURPOSE: A semiconductor light emitting device and a method for manufacturing thereof are provided to improve light extraction efficiency by forming a protrusion on the surface of a substrate. CONSTITUTION: In a semiconductor light emitting device and a method for manufacturing thereof, a protrusion(312) is formed on a substrate(310). A groove(314) exposing the surface of the substrate is formed on the protrusion. A first semiconductor layer is formed on the substrate having the protrusion. An active layer is formed on the semiconductor layer. A second semiconductor layer is formed on the active layer.
