PURPOSE: A backlight unit and a liquid crystal display device having the same are provided to improve the reliability of a scanning operation. CONSTITUTION: A backlight unit of a liquid crystal display device comprises one or more light source which emit light and a light guide plate(140) placed in parallel with the light source and converts point light into plane light. A plurality of air buffer layer is formed on the light guide plate in order to separate incident light from the light source by the sections.
