PURPOSE: A discontinuous transmission detection method is provided to maintain a uniform symbol energy metric value during all DTX(discontinuous transmission), thereby distinguishing erasures during the DTX. CONSTITUTION: Soft symbols corresponding to a transmission frame are coupled to obtain an energy term(207). The energy term is normalized to obtain metric(208). The normalization step comprises the step of eliminating the effects of channel states from the energy term. The normalization step comprises the step of dividing the energy term by a normalization factor. The normalization factor is the same as the sum of finger-combined channel estimate norms.
