Fuel gases are made from hydrocarbon stocks such as naphtha, by first separating the stock by distillation into a lower and a higher boiling fraction, mixing part of the higher boiling fraction with steam, with or without air and passing the mixture over a catalyst heated by the combustion of the remainder of the higher boiling fraction to produce a combustible gas which is then carburetted with the lower boiling fraction to give a gas of the desired calorific value. Heat for the distillation may be obtained from the combustion of part of the higher boiling fraction.
|
