PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage type water heater which prevents heat radiation due to the generation of draft in standby with heat retention. SOLUTION: Since an air distribution passage opening/closing valve 21 and an exhaust passage opening/closing valve 22 are fully closed, after the temperature of warm water in a can body 1 reaches a set temperature or more by combustion of the burner section 7, and the combustion of the burner section 7 is stopped, the air does not flow into a combustion chamber 4 from an air distribution passage 20, and the air in a flue tube 3 can not rise in an exhaust tube 18 even when the air is warmed by the stored warm water, thus the airflow due to the draft passing in the flue tube 3 from a combustion fan 9 and rising in the upper exhaust tube 18, does not generate, preventing the lowering of a temperature of the warm water in the can body 1 due to the heat radiation of warm water in the can body 1.
