The device has a monitoring device with a camera (6) for optical imaging of operating region of a vending machine i.e. automated teller machine (1). An evaluation unit (8) evaluates images recorded by the camera and examines images automatically on the suspicious image components. The monitoring device comprises a recording device (7) for storing the images. The camera is designed to record large number of images with defined time intervals. The evaluation unit is designed such that the suspicious image components are determined by comparison with predetermined patterns. An independent claim is also included for a method for avoiding manipulation at a vending machine.
