PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an agent for improving skin barrier function that improves the function of the skin of a living body for "preventing substances from breaking in the skin from outside" and an external preparatin composition containing the agent. SOLUTION: The agent for improving skin barrier function includes at least one kind selected from the group consisting ofα-sulfo-fatty acid amide compounds expressed by formula (1) as an effective component. In the formula, R<SB>1</SB>represents a 6C-16C straight or branched alkyl chain; R<SB>2</SB>represents a 1C-18C straight or branched alkyl chain optionally having hydrogen or hydroxyl; R<SB>3</SB>represents a 1C-6C straight or branched alkyl chain optionally having hydrogen or hydroxyl; and M represents any one of alkali metals, alkali earth metals and protonated amines with the total carbon numbers of not more than 6 and optionally having a hydroxyl group.
