<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat ray shielding composition excellent in the heat ray shielding effect; and to provide a method for manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The heat ray shielding composition includes indium tin oxide powder (ITO powder) having a BET specific surface area of≥40 m<SP>2</SP>/g, and a hue of dark green (in the Lab color system, L is≤30, a<0, b<0). Preferably, the ITO powder contained in the composition is surface-modified by firing an indium tin hydroxide having a hue of bright yellow to yellowish brown, or an indium tin oxide having bright yellow to yellowish brown.
