967,250. Folding carton blanks; boxes. R. L. MARTIN, and THRISSELL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 19, 1963 [Feb. 20, 1962], No. 6573/62. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] A carton folding machine comprises belts 12, 15 and 16 for moving a flat carton blank along a straight line, the said blank having a main panel 1 with end flaps 3, 2 and 4, the flaps being folded rotationally at stations R and F about lines at right-angles to the direction of motion. The blanks, which are fed from a magazine 10 by a suction feed drum 11 rotating in timed relationship with the conveyer belt 12 having dogs 13 to carry the blank at spaced intervals, pass between belts 15 and 16. At R a blade 19, operated by a four bar variablevelocity mechanism is positioned so that its free edge lies on the line about which the rear flap 3 is to be folded rotationally by a bar 17, also operated by a four bar variable velocity mechanism. At F a blade 23 and a bar 21 perform the folding operation on the front flap 3. While the blank is being conveyed for folding flaps 3 the belt 15 grips flaps 2 and 7, 4 and 8. The flaps 2 and 4 are folded by devices of duplex construction, during which folding operation the belt 15 grips the blank by flaps 3. The machine is driven by a main-shaft 34 having worms 35 which drive the various parts by gear trains. The blades 19 make one revolution per carton blank, and the arms carrying the blades 23, which are in triplicate, make one third of a revolution per blank. The blank may be made up into a collapsed tray by folding the triangular ears 3A and then folding flaps 7 and 8 over by ploughshare folders through 180 degrees to adhere to the ears 3A, the flaps 7 and 8 having had adhesive applied thereto by a gluing device. |
